Whether
Burnet(t) evolved from Burnard/Bernard or was an individual surname in its own
right has been debated. Whilst eleventh century records of Burnard/Bernard
exist in Anglo-Saxon England in Bedfordshire, Hampshire and Wiltshire and later
in the 13th century in southern Scotland, there are several instances where the
name can be shown to be interchangeable. There are also differing opinions as
to whether the early members of the family had Norman or Anglo-Saxon origins.
The Bernard
derivation has Germanic origins and means "brave bear". It comes from
the Old German words ber, meaning bear, and hard,
meaning brave or strong. The name is also found in French and other European
languages with historic Germanic influence.
In
Aberdeenshire, the name Burnett is typically pronounced Burr-nit
with a short "u" sound in the first syllable. The "e" is
also pronounced with a short vowel sound.
Gerrard Burnett wrote
(The Scotland Magazine, July 1972) that Burnett
comes from the Old English name of Boernheard,
through the later Burnard. About the year 1200, Roger Burnard made two grants
to the Monks of Melrose from his lands at Farengdun.
Alexander Burnard, or Burnett, went north in the Train of Robert I and received
lands on Deeside in the Forest of Drum, as well as the Barony of Tulliboyll in the sheriffdom of Kincardine. The family [is]
still in possession of Crathes Castle, near Drum. The Burnetts of Barnes, who
gave the name to Burnetland in the Parish of
Broughton, claimed descent from a Robertus de Burneville, who lived under David
I.
Burnards
were given the large barony of Farningdoun / Farnington in Roxburghshire, Scotland under a new system of
land-holding instigated by King David I.
As King David had a particular wish to introduce Norman or Flemish
settlers to his Scottish kingdom it would not be unreasonable to assume that
the Burnards were of that extraction. In this area
the name evolved to Burnet and the family became associated with the lands of Burnetland and Barns. A John Burnard accompanied King David
II on his journey south ending in the defeat of the King at the Battle of
Neville’s Cross in 1346. Burnard, who owned Scottish lands of Ardross in Fife
and of Currie in Midlothian, was killed in 1346.
A history of
the wider Burnett family is at the
Burnett website.
The Burnetts of Leys
went to the Northeast of Scotland. The Loch
of Leys is near Banchory.
Gerrard
Burnett wrote (The Scotland Magazine, July 1972) also wrote that the Burnetts are “possibly of
Saxon origin” is accepted since there is documentary evidence showing without
any shade of doubt that the First Laird of Leys’ (viz Alexander Burnett, c
1323) ancestors received mention in the Domesday Book (1086) and in records
before the time of William the Conqueror. These forebears appear to have lived
in the neighbourhood of Bedfordshire, England. By the time of David the First
(c 1124) of Scotland the Burnetts had gone north and settled in the south of
that country, in Roxburghshire, but more particularly in Peeblesshire. It is
interesting to note that this Peebles branch, the Burnetts of Burnetland or Barns were still to be found represented
there at the turn of the 20th century; and some Burnetts of the
[present day] no doubt descend from this ancient line. In the time of Robert
the Bruce (c 1323) they settled on Deeside.
The
present day spelling with the double “t” has evolved from the Anglo Saxon
personal name of Beorn hearde; and over the centuries
the name has taken on many forms. For example, in olden times, when Norman
French was the language of the cultured the name was prefixed by the familiar
“de” which is well seen in the works of Walter Scott. Hence this does not necessarily
indicate French ancestry, which is frequently but wrongly suggested.
The
Bishop of Salisbury, Gilbert Burnett, was the eleventh son of Lord Crimond (Robert Burnett), both of whom were mentioned
although this relationship was not indicated. Incidentally, Gilbert was
Professor of Divinity at Glasgow University in 1669. Interestingly, it was his
oldest son William who emigrated to America and subsequently became in turn
Governor of New York and New Jersey; of Massachusetts and then of New
Hampshire. And there have been Burnetts living in the United States and Canada
since that time. A David Burnett from Texas became Vice President of the US.
Even the 23rdLaird of Leys, Sir Robert Burnett, owned and then sold a vast
ranch around and including the metropolis of Los Angeles in the 1830s. No
mention was made of the globetrotting of the Burnetts over the centuries; even
in recent years they have been found on all continents.
Apart
from the famous Australian medico-scientist, Sir Macfarlane Burnet, the
Burnetts have produced many fine surgeons and medical men. In fact one
Aberdonian member, Sir Napier Burnett (also Director of the British Red Cross
among other posts), was one of the earliest recipients of the Knighthood of the
Order of the British Empire (KBE) instituted by King George V in 1917. Another
notable Aberdonian, William Burnett, [is the present] Professor of Surgery of
the University of Queensland. Incidentally his chemist father, sometime on
Deeside, was attendant of the needs of the Royal Family at Balmoral.
There
have been those who have followed in the footsteps of the Rev Gilbert. Although
not as famous, many fine ministers have come of this family, some of whom have
been missionaries in various and remote parts of the world. One [present day]
notable in this connection whose service was considered above and beyond the
call of duty was Rev Ernest Burnett, another of Aberdonian extraction, who was
first in East Africa before the War.
Burnetts
have also followed Lord Monboddo in the legal world,
although they have not become so well known.
I’m very
grateful to Gerrard Burnett for his help with aspects of this genealogy.
