Matthew Farndale was
born on 27 June 1827 (see
gravestone), the son of George & Mary Farndale (FAR00215) of Marton, farmer, baptised,
Marton-in-Cleveland. He was baptised 22 July 1827 (Marton
PR & IGI) .
1841
The
Census of 1841 for Long Newton, Stockton listed Matthew Farndale, aged 12;
servant to John Farndale (FAR00217, his uncle?) aged 45.
1850
The
York Herald, 16 February 1850; MARTON
(CLEVELAND) PLOUGHING MATCH. An interesting meeting was held at Morton, on
Friday, the 8th instant, for testing ploughmen and ploughs, not only
of the district, but the whole country … Fourteen ploughs were entered for the
competition. The field chosen for the trail was on the farm of Mr W Dale, near
the road from Middlesbrough to Stockton .. The
ploughing began about none o’clock and concluded about three o’clock. The
public were not admitted to the field until after the judges had made their
decisions …AWARDS … Third Prize, £1, to Matthew Farndale, ploughman
to Mr W Loftus, Ormesby, Ransome’s Plough.

The Census for 1851 for East Coatham, Kirkleatham listed Matthew Farndale, aged 22;
unmarried; an agricultural labourer and lodger with the
Wray family; born Marton (ie born 1829).
1855
Matthew Farndale
aged 27, bachelor, labourer of Skelton, son of George Farndale (FAR00215), labourer, married Ann Readman aged 21,
by licence, spinster of Coatham, daughter of John Readman, joiner at Christ
Church, Coatham, on 20 Oct 1855. Matthew and Ann
signed. The witnesses were Rolf Carrick and Jane Lewis. John Postlethwaite was
the Rector (MC).
Mary Farndale,
was born at Marske on 4 November 1855 (FAR00414).

Ann Farndale was
born at Coatham on 27 December 1857 (FAR00428).

Farndale was born at Coatham on 30 December 1860 (FAR00442).

Census of 1861 for 13 Pierson Street, Coatham listed John Readman, head; married; age
49; carpenter; born Skelton; Mary Readman, wife; married, age 45; born Marske;
Ann Farndale, daughter, married, age 26, dressmaker,
born Marske; Mary Farndale, grand-daughter; age 5; scholar; born Marske (ie born 4 Nov 1855) (FAR00414) (note the reference to granddaughter
is because they were living with Matthew’s parents in law); Ann Farndale,
grand-daughter; age 3; born Coatham (born 27 Dec 185) (FAR00428); Maria Farndale, grand-daughter; age
9m; born Coatham (30 Dec1860) (FAR00442). Matthew Farndale must have
been away; Ann Farndale’s maiden name was Readman.

George Farndale was born at East Coatham on 5 December 1862 (FAR00451).

John Thomas Farndale was born at East Coatham on 22 March 1866 (FAR00473).

1872, at Three o’clock in the Afternoon …all that parcel of ground situate at
East Coatham, in the County of York, now used as a Timber Yard, together with
Timber Sheds, Saw Mill, Joiner’s shop, and other buildings … and also all those
three several Messuages or Dwelling Houses, situate at East Coatham aforesaid,
together with the Outbuildings and Appurtenances thereto belonging, and now in
the several occupations of Matthew Farndale, John Readman. And Joseph

Lofthouse and District Ploughing Matches took place in a field belonging to Messrs
Farndale at Kilton, on Thursday January 23rd. The ploughing was
considered exceptionally good and resulted as under … District Class – 1. Mr
Matthew Farndale, Kilton, 2. Mr Martin Farndale, Kilton … Dinner was provided
by Mrs Farndale, Kilton …
Since Mathew Farndale (FAR00225) had left for Australia by this stage, the ploughman in first
place must have been this Matthew Farndale.
Ann Farndale run a Temperance Hotel at Saltburn. The Redcar and Saltburn

The Northern Weekly
Gazette, 14 May 1874: TRADE DIFFERENCES. THE CRISIS IN CLEVELAND. A Council meeting
was held at Mr Farndale’s Temperance Hall, Saltburn, on Saturday, when a
resolution was passed, the practical result of which is, that the ironstone
miners of Cleveland, cease working, and the whole iron industry of the North is
threatened with a shock from which it will not easily recover.

Darlington and Richmond Herald, 27 June 1874:
… On Saturday morning, a Council meeting of the Association was held at
Farndale’s Temperance Hotel, Saltburn, when the delegates reported the decision
of their various lodges. A resolution was passed, and Mr Grieves proceeded to
Middlesbrough, and the following communication was handed to the Secretary of
the Mine Owner’s Association: “CLEVELAND MINERS’ ASSOCIATION. “Carried
unanimously at council, June 20, 1874, That we accept
the employers’ terms offered on June 18th, 1874 …”

aged 33; laundress (FAR00428); John T Farndale, son; unmarried; aged
25; agricultural labourer (FAR00473); Robert W Farndale, son; unmarried;
aged 22; agricultural labourer (FAR00490); Mary Readman (sister in law), 83 (the
age is probably an error – see 1901 census); Sarah Jane Whaite (granddaughter),
2 and a lodger also living with them.
1898
Anne Farndale, died, age 64 and was buried at Christchurch, Coatham 27 Aug 1898 aged 64 (therefore born 1834). He death was registered in 1898 for Guisborough (BMD).

Annie Farndale, daughter; unmarried; age 43; laundress (FAR00428); John T Farndale, son; unmarried; aged

aged 32; general labourer (FAR00490); Mary Readman (sister in law), 43,
widow also living with them and Sarah Jane White (granddaughter), 12.
1905
Matthew Farndale,
aged 77 died on 7 January 1905 and was buried at Christchurch, Coatham on 11 Jan 1905. The family were
still living at 10 Allerton Terrace at that time.
The gravestone in Coatham Churchyard reads: ‘Matthew Farndale
born 27th June 1827 died 7th January 1905 also his wife Ann, born 7th July
1834, died 24th August 1898, also their daughter Mary born 4th November 1855,
died 26th March 1899. Annie (Farndale) died 11th July aged 75 years.’
