Farndale, daughter of Charles and Ann (nee Dale) Farndale (FAR00341) was born in 1884 and
her birth was registered in Guisborough
District in the third quarter of 1884 (GRO Vol 9d page 520).
1891
The Census of 1891
confirmed that Charles Farndale, head; married; aged 50 was still farming at Kilton Hall Farm. With him were Ann Farndale, his wife;
married; aged 43; born Danby; and their children William Farndale, son;
unmarried; aged 15; born Kilton (FAR00531); George Farndale, son; unmarried; aged 14; born
Kilton (FAR00540); Mary Farndale, daughter; unmarried; aged 13; born
Kilton (FAR00560); Grace Farndale, daughter; unmarried; aged 10; born
Kilton (FAR00566); Albert Farndale, son; unmarried; aged 9; born
Kilton (FAR00574); and Sophia Farndale, daughter; aged 4; born
Kilton (FAR00601A).
1899
By 1899,
she was selling toys at the new year bazaar:
Northern
Echo, 3 January 1899: BROTTON WESLEYANS. On Monday the Brotton Wesleyan
Methodist Society held their annual New Year's Day tea, sale of work etc and
the event was a successful one. The stalls for the bazaar had been arranged in
the schoolroom, and filled with a choice of good, useful and fancy articles.
The ladies who superintended them were Miss farndale, Kilton Lodge, Mrs Merryweather
and Mrs Mede, ladies’ work stall; Miss Farndale, fruit, sweets, jellies etc and
Miss S Farndale and Miss Snave, toys etc. At
the time for the opening of the proceedings of goodly number of persons
assembled in the schoolroom including visitors from Loftus, Skelton, Kilton and
other places. The opening ceremony was gracefully performed by Mrs Davison …
1901
The 1901 Census recorded Charles Farndale, head; farmer; aged 63 now
living at Stank House, Kilton estate. The family then comprised: Ann Farndale, his wife; aged
53; born Danby; George Farndale, farmer’s son, aged 24; born Kilton.(FAR00540); Mary C Farndale, daughter; aged 23; born Kilton. (FAR00560); Grace Farndale, daughter; aged 20; born Kilton, (FAR00566); Albert Farndale, son; aged 19; born Kilton. (FAR00574) who was an architect pupil; Sophia Farndale,
daughter; aged 16; born Kilton (FAR00601A) and also John Featherstone
and John Holliday, servants, horsemen.

Herald, South Durham and Cleveland Advertiser, 18 June 1904: LOCAL
CHAPEL MEETINGS. In connection with the
anniversary of the Society of Friends Junior Sunday school, West Hartlepool, a
children’s service was held on Sunday afternoon, when an address was given
by... Special hymns and anthems were sung by the scholars and the choir, led by
Mr William Nixon, the accompanists being Miss Jackson and Mr Farndale. In the afternoon
and evening recitations were given by the children... In continuation of the
Brotton Wesleyan Sunday School Anniversary public meeting was held in the
chapel on Monday,... Songs were sung by... Miss S

Gazette, 26 January 1906: STAITHES. WESLEY GUILD. In connection with this
Guild, a very enjoyable evening was spent on Monday night, when a lantern
lecture was given by friends from Brotton, entitled “A ramble through the Children's
Home.” Mr Cook presided. The connective readings were given by Mr H Dales. Songs,
duets and recitations were rendered by Miss Farndale,...

Farndale, married Maxwell Foster (1 July 1866 to 23 March 1947) in 1909 and the
marriage was registered in the fourth quarter of 1909 at Guisborough (GRO
Vol 9d page 1034). Maxwell was much older than Sophia and brought with
him a large family.

Foster was a miller and later corn merchant, who had married Alice Hurworth
(1864 to 1906) in 1886 and already had a large family.

November 25th,1909 and the first marriage was that of Miss Sophia
Farndale (Wainwright, Greta (1966), Brotton
