Charity Baker was the daughter of William and Sarah (nee Bagnall) Baker (FAR00084) And was born in or about 1773 in Fenton, Staffordshire (Census records).

 

Charity, born 1773, married 23 June 1801 her first cousin, Major Charles Thorley, Senior Major, 96th Regiment, and commanding Essex Militia, of Colchester, Essex, eldest son of Captain Edward Thorley, of Colchester, by his wife Mary (BAK00082), younger daughter of William Baker of Highfields, and died 1851, leaving issue, one daughter (who dsp 1862). Charity Baker married Charles Thorley at Chetwynd, Shropshire on 22 January 1801 (Chetwynd, Shropshire Parish Records).

Charity and Charles’ only daughter, Mary Montague Thorley, was baptised on 24 October 1802 at Chetwynd, Shropshire (Chetwynd, Shropshire Parish Records).

Charity Thorley died in 1857 and was buried on 11 March 1857 at St Botolph, Colchester, Essex (St Botolph, Colchester, Essex Parish Records). Probate was granted on 30 March 1857 (Prerogative Court of Canterbury Wills, PROB 11, piece 2249, Volume 6, Quire Numbers 251 to 300 (1857)).

 

 

 

Charity Thorley. This is the last Will and Testament of me Charity Thorley of Colchester in the County of Essex, widow. I give devise and bequeath and in pursuance and exercise of every power or powers vested in me or in anywise enabling me in this behalf I appoint and dispose of all the real and personal estate whatsoever and wheresoever of or to which I shall at the time of my decease be seized possessed or entitled or over which I have any disposing power unto and to the use of my dear daughter Mary in consideration thereof the said sum hereinbefore mentioned and to the several matters and qualities hereinbefore specified for and to her own use and benefit and appoint my said daughter sole Executrix of this my will And directing that all wills and testaments made by me at any time heretofore be and the same are hereby revoked I declare this to be my last will and testament In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this sixteenth day of January in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and fifty seven.

 

Signed by the said testator Charity Thorley in the presence of us who being both present at the same time & witness the same have hereunto subscribed our names as witnesses, James Reynolds. Richard J. Keeling

 

Proved at London the 30th March 1857 before the Judge by the oath of Mary Montagu Thorley spinster the daughter the sole Executrix to whom Admin was granted having been first sworn duly to administer.

 

1861

 

Charity’s daughter, Mary Montagu Thorley died on 31 December 1861 in Colchester and is buried at Colchester Cemetery (Find a Grave Index).
