1809
There is a family bible which records that he was
born on 23 December 1809. He was not baptised until he was about five years old.
The census records and death records verify that he was born in about 1809.
Henry Hall, the son of
Robert and Catharine (nee Eldershaw) Hall (FAR00070) was baptised on 10 February 1814
at St Giles, Newcastle under Lyme.

1832
Henry Hall married
Elizabeth Godwin (1808 to 1879) on 20 November 1832 at the Anglican church of
St Bartholomew, Norton-in-the-moors (St Bartholomew, Norton
in the Moors Parish Records).

Founded by Henry Hall, his
business grew into a highly successful timber merchant operation during the
height of the Industrial Revolution. The nineteenth century was characterized
by an insatiable demand for wood due to expanding cities, infrastructure
projects, and the development of the British railway network. Henry Hall
established a multi-generational business. By the mid nineteenth century, his Robert
and James Hall joined the firm, first as clerks and later as partners. The firm
formally operated under the name Messrs H. Hall & Sons. The business
allowed Henry Hall to become a prominent civic leader. He served as an
Alderman, Justice of the Peace, and Freeman of Newcastle-under-Lyme. The family
resided at affluent local addresses like Nelson's Place and Brampton. Following
Henry’s death in 1871, his son James continued the business. By the late nineteenth
century, James’s son, Arthur John Hall, who later became a notable Colonel in
the military, also entered the family trade, continuing its operations into the
early twentieth century.
