September 1922:
A HUSBAND’S PENSION. An allegation that she made a false statement for the
purpose of obtaining an old age pension for her husband, Matthew Dennis, was
made at Margate police court on Wednesday against ***. The full statement was
that she represented she did not receive any pension from the Army or Navy,
whereas she was actually in receipt of a pension of 18s
in respect of her son Lance Corporal William Dennis, of East Kent Regiment... John
Robert farndale, pension officer, at Margate, said he told *** that their
income was considered jointly in assessing an old age pension. He put the usual
questions to *** and in reply to the questions whether she received any pension
or allowance from the Army or Navy she replied “No”. He asked her if she had
any other means and she replied that she earned a small amount weekly by
washing and in the season did a little letting. *** declared that she herself
was not questioned as to whether she had any Army or Navy pension. The question
was put to her husband, but she was in the room. In reply to the Bench, Mr Farndale
said that the defendant did not sign any form, as the application was in
respect of her husband....

10 October 1923:
ILLEGAL SALES. £40 FINES FOR RAMSGATE AND SKIPPER. “A floating public house”
was the description given by the Chief Constable of Ramsgate to the pleasure
yacht, the New Moss Rose, when the skipper, *** of ***, Ramsgate, and the ***
were summoned at Ramsgate police court on Friday, each on full counts, for
contraventions of the terms of the licence of the vessel... Evidence was given
by Thomas Scott, an excise officer, who said that on August 8th at 10:15 AM, he
went on board the New Moss Rose alongside the pier and went down to the fo’c’sle
and purchased a bottle of beer from defendant **, who was acting as barman... **
said he could take it if he paid a deposit for the bottle and kept it out of
sight. Mr Farndale was also supplied with a bottle to take ashore. Neither
witness nor Mr Farndale sailed as passengers on that day. Questioned by Mr Allfree, who appeared for defendants, witness said he did
not tell ** that he did not intend to sail as an ordinary passenger or that he
was a Customs and Excise officer. It was after he had consumed the beer on
August 8th that he told them he did not intend to sail. John Robert Farndale
gave corroborative evidence with regard to the alleged
offences on August 11th, and said he was sold a bottle of beer especially to
take ashore...

December 1923: A
SMART CRIMINAL. He was of smart appearance, wearing glasses and a grey suit of
the latest style with butterfly colour and black knitted tie. With the exception of saying he had no questions to ask and
pleading guilty he only made two remarks throughout the proceedings. The charges
against him were breaking and entering 33 Windsor Ave on October 29th
and stealing two dresses, one costume, a ladies coat, two
blouses, two pairs of shoes, a gent’s overcoat, two suits, two rings, two gold brooches,
a string of pearls and a green suitcase, the property of John Robert Farndale,
together the value of £49 8s 5d...
“Miss” Anne Farndale who
also gave evidence, was John Robert Farndale’s wife. Thanet Advertiser, 8
December 1923: HOUSE
RAIDS. ASTONISHING COURT STORY. GIRL WHO WAS LED ASTRAY. There were three
sequels to the recent house breaking cases in Margate at the Police Court on
Wednesday when ***, described as an artiste, of no fixed abode, was charged
with house breaking... The charge against
** was that on that of receiving from ** between the 29th
October and the 20th November a coat and waistcoat value £5 5s, the property
of John Farndale, knowing it to have been stolen. ** was committed for
trial at the quarter sessions, ** was bound over to be of good behaviour for 12
months and ** was sentenced to three months hard labour. ** was brought up
first. Evidence from Miss Annie farndale, of 33 Windsor Avenue, showed that the
house was entered and ransacked between 3:50 and 5:30 PM on October 29th while
the occupants were out.... In the case against **, John Robert Farndale, an
officer of Customs and Excise, 33, Windsor Avenue, gave evidence of the
clothing mentioned having been stolen...

September 1928:
A member of the Margate Town Council, ***, together with his wife...
appeared at Margate Police Court on Wednesday when they were summoned for
selling intoxicating liquor on unlicensed premises... John Robert Farndale
corroborated, adding that they inspected **’s private store, which contained seven
dozen bottles of bass.... meanwhile observation was kept on the front and rear
of the premises. Mr Farndale and Mr Townend, while interviewing the defendant
later, saw the girl who had bought bought the drinks
and she stated that she had got them from the Hotel Metropole. The proprietor
of the hotel said that he did not sell from his beer in his establishment.

December 1928:
UNBOOKED BETS. WESTGATE PARTNERS FINED. Two well known
local bookmakers, *** and ***, were fined £7 16s each at the Cinque Ports Police
Court, at Margate on Monday, for failing to enter certain bets, made by a lady
client upon the books made for that purpose contrary to the Betting Law 1926....
On 9th October, Mr. John Farndale, an excise officer, went to
the offices at Westgate and made his usual examination of the books to verify
the duty returns. On the occasion *** was in the office and in response to his
inquiry, produced the required books. In the course of his examination
he discovered that a number of sheets were missing. He asked for the book which
these sheets were contained. *** said there were no more books and became
distressed. He then left the premises. On 19th October he again visited the office
in company with another officer, Mr MacLeod. On this occasion they saw the two
defendants and the required book was produced. Upon examination they discovered
that several sheets relating to a lady's account were missing from that book.
When questioned they were told that they had been burnt. Mr. John Farndale and
Mr McLeod gave evidence of the visits...
