Joseph Farndale, son of Thomas and Mary Ann (nee Jameson) Farndale (FAR00317) was born at Hopperton in Great Ouseburn District on 22 July 1861 (1939 Census) and baptised at Allerton Maulever on 27 April 1861 (BR). Joseph Farndale’s birth was registered in Great Ouseburn District in the third quarter of 1861 (GRO Vol 9a, page 90).

Joseph Farndale, 35, a builder, married Mary Ann Shepherd, 36 of Great Ayton at Harrogate on 26 January 1897. At the time of his marriage, his father Thomas was also a builder.

He sold the a large amount of property at Denehurst, Otley Road, Harrogate, which presumably he had developed, in 1902.

 

Leeds Mercury, 11 January 1902: HARROGATE. HIGHLY DESIRABLE AND COMPACT INVESTMENT PROPERTY. RENTON and RENTON will sell by auction, at the Clarendon Hotel, Harrogate, on Thursday, 23rd January 1902, at 4:30 o'clock in the afternoon precisely, subject to the general conditions of the Incorporation of Leeds Law Society, and to the special conditions to be then produced. The undermentioned PROPERTY namely: LOT 1. Seven newly erected dwelling houses situate in College Road, off Otley Road, Harrogate, occupied by Mr A Jatt and others, and containing parlour, kitchen, scullery, and pantry on ground floor, with two bedrooms and two attics over. Each house is a separate garden and yard attached, with outside WC. They form the southern portion of the terrace constituting the west side of College Road and are well tenanted. LOT 2. The dwelling house and shop and the three dwelling houses adjoining, situated on the east side of College Road aforesaid, and now occupied by Mr Shepherd and others. This block is well built of stone throughout, and each house contains parlour, kitchen and scullery on the ground floor, with two bedrooms, bathroom, WC and two attics above, and wash kitchen, pantry and cold place in the basement; with garden, yard and outside WC. The shop portion is similar, except there is no parlour on the ground floor. Lot 1 is partly freehold and partly copyhold of the Forest of Knaresborough, where the fine is nominal; and Lot 2 is entirely freehold. In 1903 he seems to have been developing property in College Road, Harrogate, as this appeared in a survey report of the area:

 

Pateley Bridge & Nidderdale Herald, 18 July 1903: The borough surveyor reported that he had given certificates for the following new houses, viz:... One house in College Road, for Mr. J Farndale...
