Telegraph, 27 Jun 1985, Thu · Page 1: WANDERLOST WILLIAM! A mix up in
his holiday arrangement left a Leeds print worker stranded in a Cleethorpes
police cell and started a missing persons alert. Mr William Farndale, who is
hard of hearing, misunderstood where he was supposed to meet his family at the
start of their weeks holiday and ended up at the wrong seaside resort.
While his family waited in vain for him to arrive in Filey,
North Yorkshire, Mr Farndale was in Cleethorpes wondering where they had gone.
When he had not arrived by Saturday his wife, Rosemary became worried and
contacted the police. Meanwhile, Mr Farndale had spent hours of fruitless
search of Cleethorpes for Flat 2, Mitford Street, the address of the holiday
flat in Filey. Cleethorpes Police told him that there
was no such address in the resort and offered to put him up in the cells for
the night. Mr Farndale gratefully accepted. Unaware of his family’s concern,
he returned home to find he was locked out. He borrowed some money from a
friend and booked himself into the Boundary Hotel in Leeds. Meanwhile, the
police were becoming so worried they released an appeal for information of his
whereabouts. His new holiday venue we finally emerged
and the family have now been able to get on with enjoying their week in Filey, but totally unflustered Mr Farndale has
decided to spend the rest of his holiday in the Leeds hotels. Proprietor Mr Geoff
Potter said today turn on “He has taken the whole thing very calmly and can't
really understand what all the fuss is about. He is very happy here and has
been enjoying a few trips around the countryside. He has become a bit of a
celebrity with the other guests.”

quarter of 2000 aged 73.

Rosemary died in 2015.
