Cleveland Standard, 4 July 1936: NEWCASTLE YOUTH DROWNED AT MARSKE. CHASE AFTER BALL ENDS IN FATALITY. A treacherous undertow which is almost always prevalent between Marske and Saltburn at low tide claimed another victim on Friday afternoon. He was Roy Seribens, aged 16, of Greenhouse Terrace, Elswick, Newcastle one of 146 Armstrong Vickers apprentices camping at Windy Hill, Marske. A ‘Standard’ reporter who was on the scene shortly after the fatality learned that Scribens, accompanied by five other youths from the camp, had gone down to the beach to play with a ball. The ball accidentally went into the sea and they all went in to fetch it back. It was then that Scribens and other two lads, Thomas Hunter, 16, of Canning Street, Benwell, Newcastle and John Stevenson, 17, of Sutton's Dwellings, Benwell, were suddenly swept off their feet by the strong undertow and carried quickly out to sea. … Scribens’ body was recovered some 2 ½ hours later, being seen from the clifftop by two members of the Boy’s Brigade, George farndale, aged 15 and William Bennell, aged 14, both of Jarrow. Bennell stated that they were standing on the Cliff when he saw Scribens’ body by the water’s edge. Farndale then ran over to see if it were him. “I called Bennell and both of us dragged him out. His face seemed to be buried in the sand. Two men in bathing costumes came along and applied artificial respiration,” said Farndale. Seen afterwards by a reporter, these two men refused to give their names, but admitted being Middlesbrough policemen. A van rushed Scribens along to Marske, where injections and heart massage were applied by Dr Holroyd, but to no avail.... John Stevenson, aged 17, of Sutton dwellings, Benwell, Newcastle, said that he managed to get back to the shore without help, but was exhausted. Several of the rescuers got into difficulties and had to be helped. George Farndale, Clyde Street, Jarrow, and another boy found the body later about 250 yards from the scene of the tragedy....
