The Story of the Leicester Line

John William Farndale was born in Leeds in 1886. He married Dorothy Chamberlain in Leicester and after service in the first world war (during which time he suffered a gas attack), he settled in Leicester where he worked as a leather salesman.

In 1901, John William Farndale was working as an office boy in Leeds and in 1911 he was a sorting clerk there.

 

21 February 1916

 

John William Farndale was attested into the army and joined 434th (Siege) Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery.

21 April 1916

John William Farndale married Dorothy Doris Chamberlain in Leicester.

 

22 February 1917

 

Pauline Margaret Farndale, daughter of John William and Doris Farndale, was born in Leicester. Pauline married Samuel Clarke in 1938.

16 September 1918

Gunner John William Farndale was evacuated to Rouen after a gas attack, and later to the General Hospital at Leicester.

John William Farndale was demobilised at Shoreham by Sea, Sussex.
